I am making progress on it.
Its way out of my personal depth, I use linux just for gEDA/PCB and always have to argue with it when I need to reinstall.
If I can make a live boot CD that can store the git tree and someones home directory on a thumb drive and have avr-gcc and the emulator on it I will be stoked.
At the moment I am having a problem with the emulator keys.
Only the most recent key press auto repeats. For example in T2K if you press and hold left - the claw moves left. If you then press and hold fire the claw shoots continiously but the claw stops. So then you re-press left (and hold it) and the claw stops shooting.
It is though only one button can be held down.
Does someone know if this is a debian/gnome3 thing or is it all linux/SDL versions and the uzem code needs to be changed to accomodate ?

Strange, I don't think I have noticed that issue on Ubuntu. I have VM installed, I'll try tornado on it and see if I get the same issue.
