Holy crap! I remember at some point somewhere we were talking about the idea that the ESP8266 itself is very powerful and probably enough to be an entire system. Those line, square, etc drawing tests though, are amazing and seem like a lot more power than I would have thought. Eh, Wifiboy could play cross platform tetris with Uzebox on UzeNet even...interesting. Thanks for the links I am definitely going to acquire one of these :)

Only think I miss on Wifiboy is classic 4 button dpad or joystick instead of 2 buttons...
And battery + SD card slot. But this is proof that there can be nice game console based on ESP-8266.

We need uzESPrite Boy!!!

I agree it could use more buttons to support more types of games. At least d-pad +4 face buttons.

I wonder if they could get by without the extra SD slot, if Roms could be downloaded on demand from the internet? Probably used mostly at home, but even in most places wifi is usually available...or wifi hotspot on cellphone.

Wifi uploading will be nice feature.
Maybe mobile phone or tablet (android ftp app) should work as external Wifi ftp drive.
Everyone got tablet or mobile and there is lot of space.
Also tablet/mobile can be wifi server for multiplayer games!!!
(more powerful than wifiboy)
So no SDcard will be needed (cheaper price).
I think they are using LUA language and PC USB for uploading code.
With wifi and internet there can be also mmo RPG 2D.
Or racing game with hiscores on internet or something like that.
Or multiplayer fighting games.
Also instead of beeper there should be DAC (like on PC COVOX or AMIGA) and
earphones out for playing MOD files (there are lot of PC MOD trackers).

The graphics on the screen look nice but too small for my old eyes. A tv out would make it much better.

I wonder if they could find a larger LCD that still speaks SPI as a happy medium, maybe a build option, but TV out really would be a killer feature to have. I don't know much about it, or if random interrupts to support NTSC would be reliable while servicing all the network stack stuff. Though if they went with the ESP32, that is a whole dedicated processor that gets to do nothing but run user program. Maybe it is enough power to do color encoding by itself and not need something like an AD725.
