New Game: Donkey Kong

Postby paul » Wed Mar 24, 2010 1:22 am

Before he was a plumber named Mario, he was Jumpman the carpenter! He also had a crazy ape named Donkey Kong that kidnapped his girlfriend, The Lady... She was later re-named Pauline (the girlfriend, that is). And what a looker she is, too; well worth risking life and limb, climbing 100m into the air after.

The Ramps and Rivets levels appear from L=01. The Elevators level appears from L=02. The Pie Factory level appears from L=03.

There's been a ton of re-makes over the years, and they're all ranked against the original arcade version here. I think the Uzebox version stacks up pretty well, but I'll let you be the judge ;)

Massive thanks go to Lee Weber (aka D3thAdd3r) for all of the good sounding music and sound effects (I did all the bad sounding ones). The game would only be half-complete without Lee's help. Thanks, Lee!

Controls:

  • A,B: Jump
  • Dpad: Walk/Climb/enter initials for high score
  • Start: Begin/Pause/Commit high score
  • Select: Cancel game and return to title screen.
  • Interludes: Most buttons will skip interludes.

The difficulty scales every few levels from L=04 onwards. L=15 and up is dialed in at "stubbornly difficult".

Code is here.

Enjoy!

Edit:
- Updated hex and uze files with Lee's sound patch for Donkey Kong's demise (was far better than mine).
- Fixed "How high can you try ?" screen to reflect true progression and thus indicate that more levels are to come.

Excellent stuff Paul, yet another top notch addition to the Uzebox library. This is easily amongst the most well done games.

Awesome work Paul, the best arcade port and one of the best Uzebox game so far! Yet another great game in your classics series. Before soon I will have to open a new Wiki section just for you!

@To other Uzeboxers: c'mon guys! If you read this, give the game a spin and post some comments, I know we don't always take the time, but it's always appreciated! :)

Thanks for the kind words!

Uze pointed out that my progression ladder screen was inaccurate (didn't match arcade version), so I have updated that in the new uze/hex. It should now indicate to the less persistent gamer that there may be missing levels yet to reach.

I don't have a cabinet for this...

I REALLY need to find the time to fix up my Uzebox JAMMA and get it into a cab

Just played again, man who thought DK was that tough! I really love the intro, just keep viewing it again and again! :geek: It sucks my capture card blown out last year otherwise I would have made another video with it. :( I'll try to dig up an older card because there a slew of games lately and I think it's worth making a new vid!

I don't think I'll ever legitimately achieve "L=15", I'd be happy to get 4

I was waiting for an opportunity to really play this one before I posted.
I have to say I loved it, even though I only got to L=3  .
My only suggestion would be to remember the initials, sometimes I just leave it AAA because I'm too lazy to find F, H and Z, :lol: . Unless you are really trying to be faithful to the original, then leave it like this.}

Can't you just capture the screen while using the emulator  ?
Cheaper than buying a new card.

That's definitively one of the most sough after function in uzem! The first to implement it receives a Fuzebox deluxe kit! 8-)
