Thinking about investing in a Uzebox

Post by zanthranfox »

Hi,

I'm new to Uzebox, I think it's a pretty cool idea to learn how gaming systems or Special Purpose Computers (SPCs) work.

I'm left with only one question..

What is the limit in size that I can have for a game on the system? Is there any way around the limits? (Bankswitching, etc)

Thanks!

Hi zanthranfox,

The ATmega644 has 64k of flash so, once you substract the code taken by the kernel and the bootloader, games usually have ~50K left. Althought that may not seem much, with some creativity some can do wonders. Checkout MegaBomber, BC Dash or DonkeyKong for some convincing examples!

Bank switching is not practically possible since code on AVRs are only executed from flash. The possibility of self-reflashing part of the chip from the SD card during runtime has been discussed a few time, but the complexities and issues involved made it a no-go (for now at least).
