Some tips for beginner

Postby garretraziel » Mon Jun 11, 2012 10:20 pm

Hi,
I just soldered EUzebox today, but I'm still waiting for SNES controllers. In the meantime, I'd like to ask about some links for beginners about developing for Uzebox. I have searched through wiki, but I didn't know where to start, what to read and in what order. Is there anywhere any simple tutorial how to make a game? Does anybody have his own "must read" links? What do I have to read before I try to develop my first game on Uzebox? What are the must-have applications?

For example, I looked on some demo project and there were images stored in some "inc" or "raw" form. How do I use them? How can I convert normal image to that representation?

Thanks for your tips!

Yeah, I know it can be a little difficult to start for complete beginners. We don't have a dedicated page or tutorial for that, however it was mentioned a few times in past. Here's a good list in a good order I'd propose to get started (for windows):

Hi there !

Thanks for these links Uze. I am also completely new to Uzebox concept.
If some complete newbies like me ( :D ) are interested, I am planning to build a EUzebox in my spare time and I will be trying to write everything I do in a sort of day-to-day tutorial. It may take a few months (years ?) but I hope it could be useful for the community and it will help me to understand what I do too.

Well I don't know if it's a good idea but it would perhaps "concatenate" the basic information required for any beginner.

Best wishes and good luck with your Uzebox garretraziel :) .

P.S. : by the way, I wrote the tutorial for running the emulator. I managed to get it work on a Linux virtual machine but wasn't able to recompile it for Windows (using Dev-C++ and mingw) so if anyone is interested in writing the Windows part of this tutorial or give me some tips, it would be more than nice ;) .
Cheers!

It's a great idea, since it's always better to write it when you're already in it. That would indeed be a great contribution. :D

Thanks for links!

I would say that I know C very well, but hadn't ever tried to program for 8-bit microchip (only some experiments with arduino). And I also run Linux, but I'm able to compile project using makefile, and as an IDE I use Emacs.

emch: I think that day-to-day tutorial that covers everything, from the beginnings to developement of complex projects would be great!

You don't need any special tool, just the avr c compiler and any editor you like will do. If you want to use an IDE, import one of the simpler example projects into it, then compile it yourself.
