Sinclair ZX81 clone with ATMEGA644

Post by Harty123 »

Hi,

I found this interesting german website:

AX81 - ZX81 with AVR

It's an ZX81 clone made with an ATMEGA644 ... It's nearly full compatible. That means it is possible to run original software from the ZX81 on it.

Thanks for the link Harty, that's fascinating stuff. Although the ZX81 was a fairly limited machine with only text mode, that it actually runs existing programs at full speed is a feat by itself.

I've sent a mail to Joerg Wolfram and asked him about the possibility to port this software to the Uzebox... Perhaps a good extension to the Uzebox...

Great find. Emulating a Z80 on a AVR is no mean feat.

I've still got a ZX81 and the later ZX Spectrum. It would be serious cool, if they was enough processing cycles in the AVR to emulate the Z80 and run the Uzebox kernel to give us a hardware emulation of the speccy but I don't think the AVR has enough grunt to pull it off :-(
