I don't know why, but I imagine crawling and flying bugs attacking the city.

I had ants and those flying ants in mind, but I suppose whatever looks best with the artwork style is probably the right choice.

How about mosquitoes? Maybe if they get to the buildings they can animate like they are sucking blood and filling up? Or ticks, same idea, but maybe they could crawl?

It would be awesome to see bugs swarming the buildings. Maybe if they get to a tower window they could stop the tower from firing, and you need to depend on other towers to kill that particular bug. That might affect gameplay a lot though :/ hmm you've given me stuff to think about!

How about a "bug zapper" upgrade to a building that is like a one-time use "last resort" (like the lawnmowers were in the original Plants vs Zombies game) that can be activated to destroy all bugs that happen to be swarming that building?

Cool idea. How would you imagine it works with "losing", right now you lose lives when enemies make it right across the map ("bullrush" style). But if they cling to buildings that kind of takes away from that. Maybe if they cling for a certain amount of time, they then automatically disappear from the building but you lose a life?

Would it be possible for a building to progressively become damaged from the clinging? That would seem it could minimize some of the defensive firepower of the city, which would make it easier for enemies to get all the way to the right and cause the life lose. Maybe that is hard to implement though.

Maybe you wouldn't lose a life until the bug "burrows" through the side of building? I envisioned the bug zapper thing being a one-time use weapon, after that it's gone and can't be used again (either that level, or maybe even the entire game unless you somehow get that power up again).

Without that powerup, you'll be helpless once a bug reaches your building (meaning you know that you'll lose a life just like how you had planned) but instead of it instantly happening, the player will have to endure a creepy blood sucking animation followed by an even creeper burrowing/window breach first.

Maybe I'm an optimist, but this all sounds possible. It will take time to code though :D hope to chip away at it most days though!
