Zelda 2 on Uzebox "purity"

Should Zelda 2 on Uzebox be a pure port or have tweaks and new secrets/areas?

The minimum number of changes necessary, I want a pure experience.

Minor tweaks only, such as restarting at the last town or palace entrance when you lose all your lives.

Change/tweak the palace layouts, add new secrets and maybe even new areas and features.

It doesn't matter to me, it'll be fun either way.

Zelda 2 on Uzebox "purity"

Postby blue_knight » Tue Dec 15, 2009 11:24 am

I've been thinking of adding some tweaks to the game. I'm a little torn on this idea, but I've been thinking of doing a "second quest" type approach, though not as drastic. The same gameplay, enemies, etc. but some altered layouts and additional secret areas. Basically it would feel like playing Zelda 2 but not everything is exactly where you remember it. Or maybe it'd be better to stay faithful and save the new stuff for the sequels.

Any comments are welcome. :)

"Major" tweaks. Having the game exactly as the original would be pretty cool, but having a different one makes it a whole new experience. It also makes it funner for blue_knight to program, and, probably, deliver earlier.

If you name it Zelda 2, I would *love* the original game.

However, been there, done that... so if you think of a nice sequel and name it different a whole new/different game in the same style would be awesome!
(ofcourse, the princess may be sleeping forever in her castle and the evil enemy must be defeated ;))

I'm not going to vote because I have not played the original. But I will say that doing perfect clones usually means wasting flash on something or other that may not be important. If you give yourself some flexibility, then when things get tight you can throw stuff out without feeling like you're compromising too much.

I'm starting to lean toward minor tweaks and leave the original layouts and features. The idea is to emulate the game but do minor tweaks to help the experience (make the game less frustrating) and minimal amount of tweaks to keep the memory manageable. Things like using the same wall tiles at the palace entrance and inside the palace - in the original the darker shade of gray was replaced by black when the background was blue. Basically the look is preserved but not perfect - though many areas will match exactly (except missing 1 row vertically and 2 columns horizontally). I can still work on new areas on occasion, I'll just use them for the sequel. :D

Thanks for the responses, if anyone else has an opinion let me know.
