How do people thing Elite would work without stars?

Would the space flight be too boring with no stars?

Would the battles be too hard not having that feedback on your speed?

My opinion, it's too long periods of open space just looking at a status bar, and when quick moving during fighting often times the only orientation you have is from the stars moving by. Why would stars be more of a problem than the planets or ships though? BBC version seems to have a pretty small number of stars, and looking at Tornado I feel like that is doable. Do you have some other trick you wanted to use that doesn't allow stars? I imagine Elite would take more ram for the actual game logic.

Yeah - I am thinking of tricks to make it filled polygons in colour.

I could do monochrome elite with stars using the video mode from asteroids/vector game.

Just tossing things up at the moment.
