Pure Atmega1284...they exists!

Postby uze6666 » Fri May 27, 2011 4:49 am

These things were more or less like a legend for AVR freaks out there. The very first 1284 devices produced (not the "P" version) were samples for (supposedly) privileged customers. Took ages before common mortals saw it, and by then it was in the form of Picopower, the Atmega1284p. Looking for a direct successor of the Atmega644, I was thrilled when I saw a distributor having them in stock and ordered a couple of them right away!

Next day came in the tube...with Atmel's logo in all it's glory... :D

yes yes it's the real thing...

Just need to test them now. Hopefully they will be more stable than the 1284p...but I'm keeping a healthy dose of skepticism. ;)

We'll see more on that tomorrow...

Great news. Look at the date code on them "1105". New stock :)

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that these 1284 chips will work. We'll have the sequel to the uzebox I'll definitely get one. :D

Results are in guys. I've tried them out....but to no avail. :( None of the 5 I had would start at all. I guess Atmel used a new fabrication process for those, and it's definitively not overclocking friendly.

Oh well, we still have the XMEGAs...

Did you at all increase the voltage levels a bit?

AH!...no wonder *nothing* worked. I just realized a used the wrong clock settings with the fuses!! At least now, 1 (out of 5) works. It's mostly fine, only the sound output distorts sometimes and some rare visual glitches. So it's not as stable as the 644, more like the 1284p I'd say. Also, I haven't tested with higher voltages. I will give it a try tomorrow.
