tutorial on internal sound for the euzebox

Post by schepers_cp »

disclaimer: this is an example, it has been tested on my own euzebox, but that doesn't say it works the same on yours, so no warranty given!

parts needed:
>27cm (11inch) wire
1x bd139 or similar
1x small speaker (32ohms)
soldering iron
soldering tin
1 small piece of double sided tape (say 1 square inch)

steps:
1: solder ~15cm (6inch) of wire to the 3rd pin on the scart connector. (if you have the euzebox with controller ports in front of you, 3rd pin from left)

2: solder the other half to a empty point to the proto pcb

3: solder the transistor's base (for bd139: pin 3) to the same point

4: solder the transistor's emitter (for bd139: pin 1) to the speaker using ~4cm wire (2in)

5: solder the other speaker terminal to a ground point on the euzebox using some wire (~4cm/2in)

6: solder the transistors collector (bd139: pin 2) to the +5V supply on the proto board

7: using the double sided tape, you can paste the speaker to a smooth point of the euzebox. i used the SD holder for my speaker

8: check for errors in the soldering

9: power your euzebox

10: test with a game that contains music

11: enjoy!

note: if the sound is too weak when you place the top cover back on, you can drill some holes into the case.
but be sure to get the PCB out before drilling, otherwise you might damage it!!

note: the transistor must be able to handle >150 milliamps of current for a 32ohm speaker, just to be safe.
note: the transistor might get hot when a songs/sounds are playing, a solution is to attach a small heatsink to it.
note: please use a 32ohm speaker to prevent the transistor from getting too warm (every half of 32ohm results in double heat, as well double output power)

modding this for an standard uzebox shouldn't be that hard. ;)
