P.S. I must confess that I'm fighting the urge to make a double-sided component placement version with the QFN packaged part to see just how small it could be made. Fit it inside a USB dongle for power, then use an FDTI USB->Serial chip along with a boot loader on the AVR to flash the program area ...

This is similar to the SD interface we were looking at. It would only add two capacitors and a SD port.
