That seems odd as many programmers got started because of their interest in video games. There are only so many blinking leds, spinning motors, weather stations, and home made apple 1s' people can look at before we want games.

I use a cheap $60 scope they work ok. It is good for 10V and 50mhz which should in theroy cover most MCU stuff. Its not professional grade and its really just a modified sound card but it has been better than nothing.
