Just received the avcore and gamer board package and it is sweet. It is hard to understand how small the avcore is without holding it in your hands. I don't think there is a mac version of avr studio (although I havent checked in a while). I can dig up an old pc i suppose.

Does anyone have a link to a simple explanation of how to change fuse bits? I always seem to have this problem and I never get a solution that I can come back to when I face the problem again.

Have you seen the sanguino? It is essentially exactly what you are describing (a little bigger obviously). It would might be cool for someone to make a "shield" type board that the sanguino plugs into that contains all the other uzebox components - this would add a bootloader and let us us...
